Philippines rice stocks good for 6 months

THE National Food Authority (NFA) said its current rice inventory stands
at 24 million bags, which, it said, is sufficient for the next six
months based on its average daily rice sales of 128,307 bags.

Based on the country's daily rice requirement of 35,400 metric tons or
708,000 bags, the NFA's rice inventory is equivalent to 34 days.

To boost its grains inventory, the NFA said it is targeting to buy 21
million bags of palay this year, nearly 60 percent higher than what the
food agency procured last year.

Meanwhile, the NFA said it was able to immediately comply with the
directive of Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap to increase by 35 percent
to 40 percent the volume being distributed in Metro Manila in the
aftermath of Tropical Storm Ondoy.

Also, the food agency said it was able to increase rice infusion in
other regions affected by Typhoon Pepeng, particularly the Ilocos and
Cagayan Valley regions, where most of palay ready for harvest were
submerged and consequently damaged by flood.

As of the third week this month, NFA Benguet has a total of 75,037 bags
in its rice inventory. The stocks will last for 34 days based on the
average daily sales of 2,228 bags.

The whole of Ilocos region, meanwhile, has a total of 1.8 million bags
of rice, which will be sufficient for the next 132 days based on the
average daily regional sales of 14,108 bags.

In the case of Cagayan Valley, the regional rice inventory is estimated
at 881,347 bags, which will be sufficient for the next 142 days based on
the average daily rice sale of 8,037 bags.

The NFA's rice inventory includes the 1.5 million metric tons which the
Philippines bought from Vietnam through a government to government
negotiation early this yea
